PhD vacancy in Optics at the ImPhys department of Delft University of Technology (SYNOPTICS project 2)

In project 2 “An integrated approach to multiscale particle detection in gas and on surfaces” of the Dutch TTW Perspectief Program SYNOPTICS, there is an open PhD position in the field of 2D detection of particles (100 -100 nm) on flat or structured surfaces, particle detection deep into the substrate, and on 3D particle detection in gases. We will work with optical techniques based on scatterometry. The common approach of the program is that in principle all properties of light (amplitude, phase, polarisation and wavelength) are used to maximize resolution, sensitivity and speed.

The consortium consists of 6 projects located in several Dutch universities and with collaboration with several high tech industrial partners and TNO Science and Industry. The PhD candidate will be able to interact with the other groups throughtout the execution of the project, since we will have regularly project meetings and short courses in several topics of the project.

The PhD candidate should have a Master of Science degree in physics or engineering and preferably some experience in optics. The project will involve simulations (optical design, electromagnetic calculations) and optical experiments.

General information
Dutch universities are a popular destination for many PhD students. Doctoral researchers are highly regarded by Dutch universities, which offer many benefits for students:

  • Employee status – PhD students in the Netherlands are paid university employees, with associated rights and responsibilities such as formal teaching
  • Four year funding – funding is available for a 4 year PhD project.
  • Historic university system – the Netherlands has several universities dating back to the 16th century
  • Global recognition – 12 Dutch universities are ranked in the top 200 in the world for 2019
