Master/International Graduate School

Joint master education with the Abbe School of Photonics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena.

The Optics Group is coordinating a joint master education in optics at Delft University of Technology and the Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

Students from Delft follow lectures in the first year of the Master at Delft University of Technology as usual. In the second year of the master they go to the Abbe School of Photonics at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena,  where they will follow lectures and do their Master Graduation project under joint supervision of a tutor from the Abbe School of Photonics and a tutor from Delft University of Technology. The student will do the final presentation and the oral defense of the master thesis work in Delft and will receive the Applied Physics diploma with an added distinctive note  that part of the master education was done at the Friedrich Schiller University.

Master students from Jena will during their first year attend lectures in Jena and will move in the second year to Delft, where they will do their master thesis project under joint supervision of a tutor from Delft University and a tutor from Jena University. The student will do the master thesis exam in Jena and will receive the master diploma Advanced Optical Imaging from the Abbe School of Photonics of the Friedrich Schiller University with an added distinctive note that part of the master education was done at Delft University of Technology.

The joint master education is based on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2018 by the rectors of Delft University of Technology and Friedrich Schiller University and by representatives of the management of TNO,  The Fraunhofer Institute in Jena, ASML and Carl Zeiss. The initiative is thus strongly supported by leading European optical industries.

The joint master will be extended by a PhD graduate school. Common research topics are in the process of being defined by the partners.
