ADOPSYS – Saddle point method for designing optical systems
Project
ADOPSYS - Saddle point method for designing optical systems
We evaluate the effectiveness of saddle point method for the design of optical systems.
Objective
In this project we mainly investigate the effectiveness of designing imaging lens systems with saddle point (SP) method. Previous research has shown that SP method shows a potential of designing lens system systematically with rather simple procedures. With the study of different optical systems, we would like to evaluate the effectiveness of the method.
Impact
The topic of the project is “saddle point (SP) method for imaging and non-imaging systems”. SP is a method developed in Optica, TU Delft, which helps discovering the regularity in optical design landscape
(for details about SP method, please check Dr.F.Bociort’s webpage: http://homepage.tudelft.nl/q1d90/FBweb/scientific_page.html).
One mission of the project is to push this research forward in order to have a better understanding of the landscape of optical design.
This project is also in cooperation with Datalogic (http://www.datalogic.com/). It is a world leading company in the field of automatic identification. The project is intended to solve some practical problems by improving the optical design relating to machine vision or non-imaging field. SP method might not be the only route. Another method called Simultaneous Multiple Surface (SMS) design method will also be applied. Dr.J.C.Miñano at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid originally develops this method.
The purpose of the project is trying to relate the practical design problems with different new design methods. Since optical design can be a rather complex problem and the design landscape is not fully understood yet, Zhe and his colleagues are working in the field building a systematic instruction for the modern optical design.
